This summer we had two interns with us. Drew Cash will be a senior at Anderson University and is studying Accounting, Finance and Investments. Treavor Dodsworth will be a senior at Olivet Nazarene University and is studying Accounting, Economics and Finance. We enjoyed having them in our office for the past eight weeks. Here are their thoughts from the summer:
"I recently had the opportunity to intern at Northwest Financial for eight weeks. On a daily basis I was performing both administrative tasks and tasks that were more financial-related. The administrative tasks included managing the phone and emails and scanning in documents from the 'orange folders.' By the end of a few weeks, I never wanted to see the color orange again. Some of the financial tasks included making a summary of Medicare and working on a simple financial plan. I was given a broad variety of tasks so that I could attempt to understand the scope of financial planning.
Overall it was a very rewarding experience. I really enjoyed getting to know the employees of NorthWest Financial on a personal level. They were always willing to stop working to answer any question that I had. I spent countless hours in Bill’s office talking through different financial concepts. Through the experience, I learned how complex financial planning really is. I found there are many other ways to help clients other than just managing investments. I look forward to continuing to pursue a career in financial planning."
"My internship at NorthWest Financial has been a great experience. The biggest thing I have learned is that there is a ton of “behind the scenes” work that takes place to help our clients get to where they need to be financially. I have also sat in on a number of client meetings with Bill, Steve, Matt, and Thomas. It was very helpful to observe what actually took place in meetings, especially after helping to gather the necessary information. There was always something new to learn whether it was the first meeting with a client or the annual checkup.
Through this internship I have gained an even stronger passion for financial planning. It is very rewarding finally being able to use what I have learned in the classroom and apply it in real life situations. I am confident that this is the direction I want to take in life. I love helping people and I love finance. So, needless to say, I loved this internship."
